Some of our clients have always been curious about Turner’s Garage & Transmission’s past. This is how everything came about! Our History—From the Owner, Wendell Turner

Johnny Turner, my father, was the one who started Turner’s Garage & Transmission in 1949. At the south end of Harvin Street in Sumter, he opened a gas station, parts store, and junkyard. I have lived on the property for more than 50 years and grew up right next to the shop. When I was just four years old, I got hooked on cars. When I started working in 1975 for my father’s best friend, a used car dealer, I was 14 years old and built my first car engine. Until I was 17, I continued working there on American and Japanese automobiles. In the meantime, my father passed away in 1970, and until 1979, the shop was run by different people. I started fixing cars in the building that used to be a parts store. From there, Turner’s Garage & Transmission took off and started serving drivers from all over Sumter.
